Net worth

Net worth is what you own minus what you owe — the sum of your active accounts that Track balance, with liabilities (credit cards and loans) counted as amounts owed rather than assets.

For each of those accounts, Big Picture Money prefers the bank’s current balance when your bank connection has stored one; otherwise it uses the register ledger total. Accounts with Track balance off are excluded. There are no live market quotes in this version: investment accounts use the cash balance you track.

Daily snapshots

Once per calendar day, the app captures a snapshot of each tracking account’s preferred balance and your household total. These snapshots power the net worth over time chart on Reports and the per-account Balance over time chart.

  • Snapshots run automatically while the app is open, and when you unlock after the app was closed
  • If a snapshot already exists for today, a second capture is skipped
  • Adding transactions or refreshing a bank balance today updates your current net worth immediately; the history chart gains a new point after the next daily snapshot

Privacy and local-first

All balances and snapshots stay on your device in your encrypted data file. Nothing is sent to a cloud service for net worth tracking.

Account types and sign

Asset accounts (checking, savings, investment, cash) add to net worth. Liability accounts (credit cards, loans) subtract from net worth when you owe money. See Account types.
