View a spending report
Reports are best when you want a saved or exportable view of spending over a selected period. Use Spending when you want an interactive donut chart, category drill-down, and the ability to fix the transactions behind the chart.
Prerequisites
- At least one active account with categorized transactions
- Transactions assigned to expense categories (see Categorization)
Steps
- Open Reports in the left navigation.
- Select Spending (or open a saved report of that type).
- Choose a date range preset (same options as Spending), or Custom range with From and To inclusive. See Choose a report date range.
- Optionally narrow accounts to include only selected accounts.
- Read the chart (bar or pie) and the table below for category names and totals.
- To save your filters, choose Save report, enter a name, and confirm.
- Reopen a saved report from the Saved reports list — the date range preset and account filter restore (named presets recalculate from today).
Transfers between your own accounts (including Credit Card Payment) and Balance adjustment rows are excluded from spending totals so money moved between accounts — or ledger catch-up rows — is not counted as everyday spending. See View income vs expense and Transfers.
Reports vs Spending
| If you want to... | Use |
|---|---|
| Save a spending report preset | Reports |
| Compare reports or prepare a shareable summary | Reports |
| Drill into categories and subcategories visually | Spending |
| Fix categories or tags while reviewing totals | Spending |
Spending and Reports use the same categorized transaction data. When the date range and account filters match, category totals should agree.
Expected result
- The chart shows category totals for the selected date range
- Category amounts match categorized expense transactions in that range (excluding transfers)
- Changing the date range or account filter updates the chart and table
- The URL reflects your filters so you can bookmark or share a view
- Saving and reopening a report restores the same date range preset and accounts
