Filter transactions
Use the Filters dialog on the Transactions register to narrow rows by date, date added, account, category, tag, text, cleared status, and source (manual, file import, bank sync, or balance adjustment). Save the result as a view when you want to reuse it.
Prerequisites
- Big Picture Money is unlocked
Apply filters without saving
- Open Transactions from the left navigation (or open a view).
- Click Filters.
- Set the fields you need. The Field list is split into Common and Advanced:
- Common — Search text, Account, Date, Amount, Category, Tag, Payee, Cleared
- Advanced — Source, Date added, Memo, Description, Reconciled, transfers/splits, Bank sync import, and other less-common fields
- Optionally click Preview to see how many transactions match.
- Click Apply.
The register updates. Click Clear on the register to remove active filters and return to all transactions.
When you open a specific bank sync from sync history, Filters may show a Bank sync import condition for that sync (under Advanced). Remove that condition (or click Clear) to leave the import-scoped list.
Save filters as a view
- Open Filters as above.
- Click Save options... — the dialog shows View name and a Pin to navigation checkbox.
- Enter a View name.
- Leave Pin to navigation checked to show the view in the left nav, or clear it to save unpinned.
- Click Save view.
The app saves the view and navigates to it. Pinned views appear indented under Views in the left navigation.
Switch between views
On the Transactions register, use the view picker (next to Filters) to choose All transactions or any saved view.
Update an existing view
- Open the view from navigation or the picker.
- Click Filters.
- Change filters.
- Click Save options..., adjust the name or pin setting if needed, then click Save view.
Single-account registers
When a view’s filters imply exactly one account (typical for account views), the register shows:
- A running Balance column by default
- Reconcile and Import actions for that account
- A heading that includes the account name
Views that span multiple accounts show the Account column instead of a running balance by default.
Columns are just defaults — use Columns on the register to hide Balance, show extra fields, reorder, or change the sort. See Choose columns for a register.
Transaction filters vs Spending filters
Transaction filters and views are for reusable registers. Spending filters are for chart-first analysis. See Views and Filter spending.
Expected result
- Apply updates the register without creating a view.
- Save options... reveals name and pin options; Save view creates or updates a view.
- Clear removes filters and returns to all transactions.

You can also ask Chat to preview a filter or propose saving it as a view. Confirm with Apply on the preview card. See Using AI Chat.
