Telemetry privacy
Optional anonymous usage sharing helps Big Picture Money understand how the app is used, which features matter, and where things go wrong — without seeing your finances. It is off by default.
During first-run setup — right after you create your data file — Big Picture Money shows Help improve Big Picture Money? with two recommended options: anonymous usage sharing and crowd categorization contribution. Turning both on improves the product for everyone. You can change either option later under Settings → General.
What may be shared
When usage sharing is on, Big Picture Money may send allowlisted signals such as:
- App version, operating system, and similar environment details
- Which feature areas you open
- That you created common items (accounts, categories, goals, budgets, tags, saved views, and similar) — not their names or contents
- That you created, edited, split, or reconciled transactions — not payees, amounts, or memos
- Which built-in reports or dashboard widgets you open or use
- That you configured bank sync or AI, used Chat, or exported data — never API keys or credentials
- Structured error codes for failed operations (not crash dumps or log files)
- Whether you accepted or corrected an automatic category suggestion, including a coarse confidence range — not payee text or category names
Never shared as telemetry
- Transaction descriptions, amounts, balances, payees, memos, or notes
- Account names or numbers, or institution names
- Passphrases, keys, tokens, or license identifiers in the stored data
- AI chat prompts or responses
- Anything you typed as free text
- Stack traces, file paths, or full crash dumps
Stored usage data is anonymized so it cannot be traced back to you from the records alone.
Separate from issue reports
Turning usage sharing off does not block reporting a problem from Help. Issue reports are explicit and only go out when you choose to send them.
